Vidyamadhaveeyam – 4th Chapter Characteristics of a Daivajna and the method of approaching him for Muhurta, Prashna, Jataka, Shakuna etc.

Vidyamadhaveeyam – 4th Chapter
Characteristics of a Daivajna and the method of approaching him for Muhurta, Prashna, Jataka, Shakuna etc.

These are important codes of conduct for both the astrologers and their clients. I am sharing this from my on-going Vidyamadhaveeyam English translation hoping that both would follow the Sastra Maryada and derive benefits from this divine science.

One who is engaged in the worship of the deities, one who has attained Siddhi of Mantras after performing their Japa, and the one who is adept in knowing the strength and weakness of benefic and malefic effects of the Saptangas - whatever results such Mauhurtika (astrologer dealing with the Muhurta branch of Jyotisha) says regarding a Muhurta will be realized without fail as if those were the words uttered by the great Rishis.

Commentary:

Deities are Shiva, Vishnu, Surya and other forms of divinity. Their worship is of two kinds – internal and external. The internal worship done through the mind is named as Atmayaga. Such internal worship is to be done by persons who are purified by Snana (bathing) and Mantras. External worship is carried out in Simhasana (pedestal where idols of the deities are kept). This is also to be carried out by a person who has purified himself (by bathing), the Mantras, material used in the worship and the idols of the deities. The astrologer should be engaged in such kinds of worship day and night. In other words, he should be worshipping the divinities in the three Sandhyas (junction periods between night and day, forenoon and afternoon, and day and night). He should have attained Siddhi of the Mantra by following the prescriptions of Japa by repeating the Mantra for a number of times like Aksharalaksha (repeating a Mantra for so many lakhs as the number of letters in the Mantra), and finishing the Purascharana (practice for gaining Siddhi of a Mantra) with the prescribed rituals of Tarpana, Ahuti and so on. Then only the Mantra can be used to attain various desires.

Saptangas include Nakshatra and other factors of Muhurta. The astrologer should be well adept in determining the good and evil effects of these factors and their strength and weakness. When such an astrologer says favourable or unfavourable results regarding the Muhurta, such words will come to pass as if they are uttered by the great Rishis. These are the characteristics an astrologer should possess.

In this connection, the words of Guru are quoted: for the purpose of carrying out an auspicious work, the Muhurta which is fortified with Yogas that remove all blemishes and available within a few days should be determined by the astrologer who is adept in determining the strength, weakness or equality of the positive elements and blemishes of the Muhurta.

As it is said that the words of the Daivajna (astrologer) are the greatest Guna (positive factor) for a Muhurta, the author is now explaining that the good or evil effects of the Muhurta will depend on the regard or the disregard shown to the Daivajna.

As an administrative power is obtained after duly pleasing a king, and as an auspicious Mantra is received from a Guru after pleasing him with devotion, the Muhurta should also be obtained from an astrologer in the same way. Such Muhurta will only yield beneficial results and success in the work undertaken. Contrary to this will manifest inauspicious results and failure of the work.

Commentary:

The administrative power which is obtained by the due process after pleasing the rulers will aid in carrying out great jobs and result in great success and prosperity. If such power is exercised without gaining the confidence of the ruler, that will cause bad effects ending up in great misery.
The auspicious Mantras of deities like Ganapati and so on, which are suitable and positive as per one’s name, obtained after pleasing the Guru (preceptor) with devotion will cause auspicious results. When the Guru is not pleased, the Mantra will not yield benefic results even when practised with great care following the scriptures. In this regard, Bhadranaga says: Without the blessings of one’s Guru, this Mantra will not result in success in this world.

Hence, the Muhurta is to be obtained by approaching an astrologer with devotion and putting the query to him with humbleness and respect. The astrologer is to be felicitated with gold (money), fruits, and flowers etc. Such Muhurta will result in great success of the work undertaken. Without the due respect to an astrologer, even the Muhurta decided by examining the time in great detail by using machines like Ghati Yantra etc. will not yield success.

Guru’s words in this matter are quoted: O Vrutrahan! (Indra who slayed the Vrutrasura), if one desires plenty in food grains, longevity, wealth and lands, he should respectfully approach in person and worship a Brahmin, who is an astrologer, to undertake all kinds of jobs. Even when the Muhurta time is endowed with great positive factors in strength and bereft of blemishes, it is to be considered as the most malefic Muhurta if it is devoid of due respect and worship of an astrologer.

Here, while saying that Muhurta is to be obtained by respectfully worshipping an astrologer, a procedure starting from respectfully questioning the astrologer and ending in his felicitation is indicated. This procedure is discussed at some other place by other scholars. In this regard, Varahamihira says: Thus, a King, saluting the Sun in the morning, holding flowers, jewels, and fruits in his hands, should approaching the Daivajnas who are adept in the science of Jyotisha and who are his well-wishers. He should worship them and ask his question only once facing the east.

Bharadwaja Rishi says: Without succumbing to greed, the King should properly worship the astrologer with golden ornaments, clothes, lands, cattle and servants as per his own capacity. On an auspicious day and in a favourable Muhurta, filling his hands with gifts, the King should approach and submit his queries to an astrologer who is of composed mind and who is comfortably seated in an isolated place.

In Brahmayamala: During the forenoon, after purifying himself and worshipping the deities, with composed mind, taking gold (money) and fruits with him, the King should felicitate the astrologer and submit his query facing east.

The query should not be asked during afternoon and night. Because, Parashara says: Any time will be auspicious to put the queries to an astrologer during the forenoon. But, the Sandhyas (junctional periods), Aparahna (afternoon), and the night are to be avoided.

Bharadhwaja says: An astrologer who is born in a good lineage, who is intelligent, who knows the scriptures, who is truthful, who is pure, who is devoted to the deities, who is devoid of greed and jealousy should be approached to submit one’s query. Such learned astrologer should be duly respected and worshipped before asking one’s question. By undertaking the job following the injunctions of such astrologers, the doer will not get any blemish.

Since it is said that the astrologer should be felicitated as per one’s capacity before asking the query, if one is wealthy, the astrologer should be grandly felicitated. If one is not wealthy, moderate gifts should be given. Otherwise, those things should be given by which the astrologer gets satisfied. Without giving anything or for the purpose of insulting, the astrologer should not be approached.

Because, it is said: inferior kind of gifts should never be given to the knower of Nimittas (astrologer). Superior or medium category of felicitation should be done to the astrologer as per one’s capacity. Then only the seeker will get the fulfilment of his desires. Otherwise, any kind of beautiful things should be submitted by which the astrologer gets satisfied. Because, the questioner’s wishes do not get fulfil by themselves by simply asking the questions. If one asks questions with indifferent attitude or by insulting an astrologer, those wishes will not be fulfilled. Instead the questioner will himself suffer misery and defeat. An astrologer should not give predictions to a questioner who only asks questions without the due respect and felicitation. By doing so, both the astrologer and the questioner would be at fault.

And again, if an astrologer pronounces results to a person who has not approached him in the manner prescribed by the scriptures, the divine knowledge will disappear from the astrologer to protect the respect of the Nimitta Sastra, and both the astrologer and the questioner will suffer disaster.

In this regard, Sahadeva also says: the knowledge bestowed to a Pashandi (atheist or who does not believe in the Vedas), thief, who does not have devotion towards the deities, Sastras and the astrologer, who has approached the astrologer with empty hands, with an attitude of deceit, crookedness, and mockery will not be realized.

Guru also says: one who undertakes a work by insulting an astrologer will surely perish. Hence, after duly worshipping an astrologer, his words should be listened to carefully and the work is to be undertaken as per those injunctions.

Naadi rules and Parivrajaka yoga

Naadi rules and Parivrajaka yoga

-Dr. K. Guru Rajesh

Naadi texts are many in number and each has its own set of rules to judge the horoscope. Chandrakala Naadi applies various conventional tools of astrology like ashtakavarga, aroodha, rasi dasas, kaalachakradasa, vimshottari dasa, navamsa position of planets, transits of planets etc. besides the crucial Naadiamsas to explain the events in the life of the native. Some other naadi texts do not bother about giving astrological reasons behind the events and they proceed explaining the events unfolded in the life of the native after giving cursory details of the native’s rasi chart.
Late Sri RG Rao has worked on naadi texts like Bhrugu naadi, Nandi naadi, Saptarishi naadi etc. and has written some books. The present article is based on the book ‘Bhrugu Nandi Naadi’ of Sri RG Rao which is said to be an english translation of compilations mainly from Nandi naadi. The book contains of some 500 odd horoscopes explaining different events and aspects of the natives with clear astrological rationale revealed in some cases and with obscure astrological reasons in some others.
A deep study of the nandi naadi reveals that the planets are given utmost significance in prediction by considering their karakatvas, mutual enmities and friendships, sequential placement etc. Ascendant is all together neglected in the horoscopic analysis. Jupiter is considered for Jeeva or the native himself and Saturn for the karma or his deeds. The 2nd, 12th and 7th signs from a planet have highest importance in judging its effects. Planets placed in the 10th and 11th also have an important influence. The sequence of planets in the natal chart contacted by a particular planet in its transit has a great say in the sequence of effects it is going to bestow. Each planet aspects the 7th sign from its position. Besides these general rules there are two important special rules to be considered. The first: if a planet is retrograde it should also be considered to be placed in the sign behind its position in the chart. The second: if there is sign exchange between any two planets then the exchanged planet should be considered to be placed in its own sign and all other general rules should be applied from that position also. Timing of events will be mainly based on the transit of Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu in relation to the natal planetary position.
After the general rules given above the special rules applicable for the present topic are enunciated below:
  1. When Saturn contacts Mars, Moon, Rahu or Ketu in a sequence in any order the native will renounce the world and becomes a sannyasi. We mean by the term ‘sequence’ that no other planet should intervene between them. However Jupiter can be placed in-between.
  2. When Saturn has Jupiter-Mars combination in the 2nd or 7th or 11th or 10th while contacting Moon, Rahu-Ketu in a sequence the native will be a sannyasi.
  3. In addition, when Strong Jupiter and/or Venus are placed in the 2nd, 7th, 12th, 10th or 11th from Saturn the native will become head of an institution or a pontiff.
  4. When Mercury is involved the native will also become a great scholar.
Let us study some real charts to check these naadi rules of sannyasa.
Chart.1. Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, born Feb 18th 1836 at 6.44 AM (LMT) at 87E44, 22N53

Exalted Saturn meets Ketu in the 2nd ,exalted Mars in the 4th and Moon in the 5th in his transits fulfilling the parivraja yoga. Saturn is retrograde and hence will move to Virgo where he will receive the aspect of exalted Venus. Furthermore, as Jupiter is also retrograde he will move to Taurus where he comes into sign exchange with Venus in Pisces. Thus Saturn will also get the aspect of powerful Jupiter from Pisces. As Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars are powerfully placed this shows a higher degree of spiritual success and the native will become an institution by himself where from many enlightened souls will emerge to spread the knowledge of Vedanta. One thing has to be observed keenly. Saturn has to meet Sun and Mercury before coming in contact with Moon in Aquarius whereby the native’s parivraja yoga has become informal as he was married to Sarada mata earlier and had allowed her to stay with him at Dakshineswar even after he took sannyasa from his guru Totapuri.

Chart.2. Swami Yogananda, born Dec 22nd 1853 at 8.36PM (LMT) at 83E22, 26N45

Saturn has Moon in the 12th, Ketu in the 2nd and Jupiter-Mars in the 7th thus fulfilling the parivraja yoga and indicates his spiritual attainments. After crossing Ketu in the 2nd Saturn meets Venus in the 3rd and Mercury in the 4th in a succession without a gap. This explains his establishing the Yogadasatsanga Society.

Chart.3. Narasimha bharati, born Mar 11th 1858 at 09.10 PM (LMT) at 78E, 13N

Saturn is placed in a Mercurian sign Gemini having exalted Venus in the 10th, Jupiter in the 11th. During his transits Saturn will come into contact with Ketu in the 3rd, Mars in the 6th and Moon in the 8th in succession thereby fulfilling the parivraja yoga. Saturn has exchanged signs with Mercury whereby he will move to Aquarius. From Aquarius Saturn has exalted Venus in the 2nd, Jupiter in the 3rd and Mercury in own house in the 5th. Furthermore, Saturn is retrograde where by he moves to Taurus receiving the aspect of Mars from Scorpio and has exalted Venus in the 11th. Thus the influence of exalted Venus in the 10th, 11th and 2nd from Saturn, the influence of Jupiter in the 11th and the sign exchange between Mercury and Saturn explains his position as the head of Sringeri mutt with a commanding scholarship and spiritual attainments.

Chart.4. Swami Vivekananda, born Jan 12th 1863 at 6.33 AM (LMT) at 88E30, 22N40

Saturn is placed in a Mercurian sign Virgo with Moon and has Jupiter aspected by a powerful Mars in the 2nd and Rahu in the 3rd. Thus Saturn will come in contact with Moon, Jupiter aspected by Mars and Rahu in a sequence thereby fulfilling the parivraja yoga. Saturn has exchanged signs with Mercury thereby moving to Capricorn and coming in contact with Venus and having Jupiter in the 10th. The strong influence of Mercury on Saturn indicates his intellectual accomplishments besides his spiritual status. Saturn thus having the contact of Mercury, Venus and Jupiter explains his establishing the Ramakrishna Mission.

Chart.5. Aurobindo Ghose, born Aug 15th 1872 at 5.17 AM (LMT) at 88E20, 22N30

Saturn is with Moon in Sagittarius and has Ketu in the 12th. The 2nd from Saturn is aspected by Jupiter and Mars from Cancer. In his transits Saturn meets Rahu, Mars and Jupiter in succession. Owing to his retrogression Saturn joins Ketu in Scorpio. As Moon and Jupiter have exchanged sighs, Jupiter will join Saturn in Sagittarius. This explains the parivraja yoga of the native and his spiritual life and philosophy. Saturn joining Jupiter in Sagittarius and Jupiter having Mercury-Venus in the 2nd from his position in Cancer explains his literary and scholarly pusuits.

Chart.6. Ramana Maharshi, born Dec 30th 1879 at 1.00 AM (IST) at 78E15, 9N50

Saturn is in Pisces having Jupiter in the 12th, a strong Mars in the 2nd and Moon-Ketu in the 4th. Thus Saturn contacts Mars, Moon and Ketu in succession in his transits fulfilling the parivraja yoga. Saturn has exchanged signs with Jupiter and hence will move to Aquarius having Jupiter in the 2nd, Mars in the 3rd and Moon-Ketu in the 5th. This explains the spiritual attainment of the saint. However as it can be observed that there is no involvement of Venus and Mercury the maharshi was not actively involved in literary pursuits or institutional establishments.

Chart.7. Swami Sivananda, born Sep 8th 1887 at 5.11 AM (LMT) at 77E40, 8N48

Saturn joins debilitated Mars and Rahu in Cancer. Due to the sign exchange between Mars and Moon, Saturn will get the association of Moon also while Mars moves to the 10th from Saturn where he receives the aspect of Jupiter. This fulfills the parivraja yoga. Venus is retrograde and hence will move to Leo to join Sun and Mercury in the 2nd to Saturn. Saturn having Mercury, Venus and Jupiter in a sequence ahead explains his literary output in the form of his books and his establishing the Divine Life Society.

Chart.8. Sri Chandrasekhara Bharati, born 16th Oct 1892 at 7.12 AM (LMT) at 13N26, 75E13

Saturn is placed in Virgo aspected by Jupiter from Pisces. Sun, Mercury and Ketu are placed in the 2nd from Saturn. After crossing Sun and Mercury Saturn will contact Ketu, Mars, Jupiter, Rahu and Moon in succession. This establishes the parivraja yoga. Sun and Venus have exchanged signs thereby moving to their respective own signs. Thus Saturn will have Venus and Mercury in the 2nd. Hence Saturn has an aspect of Jupiter from own sign Pisces and will have Venus powerfully in her own sign Libra in the 2nd. This explain his becoming the head of the Sringeri mutt.

Chart.9.Sri Chandrasekharendra saraswati, born May 20th 1894 at 1.22 PM (IST) at 79E32, 11N57

Saturn is placed in Virgo with Ketu aspected by exalted Venus from Pisces. Owing to the exchange of signs between Venus and Jupiter, Saturn receives the aspect of Jupiter also from Pisces. In his transit Saturn meets Moon in the 3rd and Mars in the 6th in succession. Further, as Saturn is retrograde he will move to Leo receiving the aspect of Mars from Aquarius. From Leo Saturn will meet Ketu, Moon and Mars in succession fulfilling the parivraja yoga. Influence of strong Venus and Jupiter explains the exalted state held by the revered Mahaswami of kanchi mutt.

Chart.10. Srila Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada, born 1st Sep 1896 at 04.00 PM (IST) at 22N35, 88E23

Saturn is exalted in Libra and meets Rahu, Mars and Moon in a sequence fulfilling the parivraja yoga. Jupiter, Sun and Ketu are placed in the 11th and Venus and Mercury are placed in the 12th from Saturn. Saturn powerfully placed having powerful Jupiter and Sun in the 11th and powerful Mercury in the 12th explains his establishing the world famous vaishnavite society ISKON with innumerable international followers and his scholarly output in the form of his books.

Chart.11. Sri Abhinava Vidya theertha, born 13th Nov 1917 at 8.29 AM (IST) at 13N, 77E35

Saturn occupies Cancer and has Ketu in the 12th and Mars in the 2nd. Further Saturn will contact Moon next in Libra. This fulfills the parivraja yoga. Jupiter is placed in the 11th from Saturn and has exchanged signs with Venus in Sagittarius. Thus Venus will also come to the 11th from Saturn. Retrogression of Jupiter takes him to Aries in the 10th from Saturn. This explains his position as the head of the Sringeri mutt and being a guru of innumearble followers.

Many other incidents in the lives of the natives of these charts can be explained by using the naadi principles but I confine myself to their spiritual life and renunciation to maintain brevity. Thus it can be observed that the naadi system as per the nandi naadi offers a simple logic behind the astrological reasoning which provides a great scope for intuition. The simplicity of rules is both the strength and the weakness of the naadi system. Non consideration of ascendant and possibility of multiple interpretations for the same set of planetary combinations make it difficult to apply the naadi system on standalone basis. However we cannot afford to ignore the important tool of naadi astrology which adds a layer of information which is otherwise impossible to glean from the conventional analysis of the horoscope.

BREAKTHROUGH IN DEVAKERALAM RESEARCH
Dear friends,
There is a major breakthrough regarding our understanding of DEVAKERALAM/ CHANDRAKALANADI. It is believed so far that the work belongs to 11th century and the author was a Keralite named Achyuta. Though, I have had my reservations because of the name of another author Venkatesa associated with the work and also because the text discusses the Jaimini school extensively which is prominent from the Andhra area.
After going through my article ‘DECODING DEVAKERALAM’, Mr. Sreenadh OG posted this article in his group for discussion among the scholars. Thanks to one of the scholars, Sri V Krishnan Nampoothiri ji, who tried and succeeded to find out the time details of the 1st horoscope, I could work out the dates and times of 7 examples as given below. Most of the horoscopes from the 9 examples I have given belong to the 17th and 18th century. I am working on the other charts also....but, I could not find the planetary positions of chart 3 in the nearby years...this may suggest that the text is an amalgamation of two different texts belong to two different periods separated by centuries. Anyhow, I am not in a state now to confirm anything as of now. I am more inclined for this inference because of the authorship of the text by two persons, Achyuta and Venkatesa.

To this Shri Shreenadh OG has added his opinion: Venkatesa could be of 18th century and Achyuta of may be few centuries before him... a possibility. Chandrakala nadi could be the original name of the text and Devakeralam the name of the modified text...another possibility.
I will keep you updated as my research progresses in Devakeralam.

DEVAKERALAM – CHANDRAKALA NADI - Chart 2

Dear friends,
“The Sanskrit text of Devakeralam has its own problems in its current form. Portions of some horoscopes are incomplete or mixed up, while same horoscopes have been explained at multiple places. Devakeralam requires thorough study, re-editing, re-interpretation and re-translation. The initial step would be to group the text according to the different horoscopes described. Then the conventional and Nadi Amsa analysis applied in the interpretation of the horoscopes are to be documented and separated into different categories based on the techniques employed. The next step includes the extraction of general rules from this study. Finally, these rules have to be applied on real-life horoscopes to check their veracity.” With this statement I had concluded my article series ‘Decoding Devakeralam’.

Accordingly I have taken up the job of re-editing, re-interpretation and re-translation of the text. Here I am presenting the English translation of the slokas. This is a draft translation and does not include the deductions and interpretations. As I said earlier, some charts are explained at multiple places. I have translated every sloka where the chart appears in the first instance and in the subsequent places, I have translated only the slokas which give extra information or differ from the first. It can be seen that the internal information within the slokas will help rectify many corruptions in the Sanskrit text and sometimes better meaning emerges when the text of different places is compared. I know this is a huge project and it may take much time to finish. And perhaps, no publisher may come forward to bring out the entire re-translation. Hence, I am sharing my work as and when it progresses. THIS IS NOT THE FINAL VERSION. This entire translation is hoped to form the basis of a book where specific astrological rules applicable for horoscopic analysis will be explained. I believe this endeavour of mine will add value to the extant astrological literature and the learned astrological fraternity will welcome it. THE AVAILABLE ENGLISH TRANSLATION BY LATE SH R.
