Ninth House and Unconventional Marriages

Afflictions to Ninth
ALL MATIERS related to marriage are to be judged from the 7th house, its lord and Kalatrakaraka Venus. The longevity of the matrimonial bond or the relationship can be judged from the 8th house and its lord. Many try to relate unconventional marriages to the 8th house but with due respect to their views, I would like to emphasize the importance of the 9th house in this context.
Marriages between those from different castes, communities and religion can be called unconventional unions. It is well known that the 9th stands for religious customs, traditions and worship. Therefore, there should be the involvement of the 9th house and its lord in the case of unconventional marriages when' such customs and traditions tend to get disturbed. Generally, unconventional marriages occur when the Kalatrakaraka Venus is associated with malefic planets like Ketu, Mars, Rahu, Sun or Saturn in signs ruled by Saturn or Mars or in the Karaka's sign of debilitation. The Dustana position of the 7th lord afflicted by a malefic can also result in an unconventional marriage.
The involvement of the 9th house in this context can be in the following ways:-
1. Influence of natural malefics on the 9th house.
2. Debilitation of the 9th lord.
3. The 9th lord placed in a Dusthana afflicted by malefics.
4. These influences should be judged both from the Ascendant and the Moon-sign.

If these factors are present from one of these points but absent from the other, there may be no unconventional marriages but there could be an illicit relationship.
Besides the 9th house, the Ascendant is also important as it exerts an overall influence on every Karakattwa. The debilitation of the Ascendant lord or association of the Ascendant lord with Rahu, Saturn or Ketu can also lead to uncoventional marriages.

Intercaste Marriages

Chart 1: Male: Born July 29/30, 1971 at 1h.30m. (IST) at 16 N 19, 80 E 26.

The native (Chart 1), a Brahmin, fell in love with a girl from a lower caste and married her in 1996. Note the association of Mars and Rahu in the 9th while the 9th lord from the Moon, Mercury, is afflicted by the aspect of Mars who himself is already afflicted by association with Rahu. In Navamsa, Mercury is in an inimical sign and associated with Rahu. The lord of Ascendant and Kalatrakara Venus is highly afflicted by all the natural malefics.

Chart 2: Male: Born July 28, 1976 at 16h.24m. (IST) at 15 N 43, 79 E 19.

He later eloped with a Brahmin neighbour and got similar treatment from her parents also. Note the presence of Mars and Moon (8th lord) in the 9th house while the 9th lord Sun is afflicted severely in the 8th by functional and natural malefics. From Chandra Lagna, the 9th house lodges Ketu who in turn is aspected by Saturn.

The native of Chart* 3 is a Brahmin working as an ayurvedic doctor. He married the native of Chart 4 belonging to a backward community. She works as a teacher. From Chandra Lagna, the 9th lord Saturn is afflicted in the 9th by Ketu and the aspect of Mars. The presence of exalted Moon in the 9th, of Brahmin planets on the 7th and its lord, both from the Ascendant and Chandra Lagna, justifies her marriage with one from a higher caste.

The debilitation of 9th lord Mercury in the 6th and his association with the Sun and Mars may be noted. From Chandra Lagna (Moon-sign), the 9th lord is Saturn who is afflicted by his association with Rahu. The 9th house is occupied by Venus and Ketu. Kalatrakaraka Venus is also heavily afflicted. The exaltation of the 7th lord from the Moon, Jupiter, gave him a wife from the Brahmin community.

From Chandra Lagna (Moon-sign), the 9th is occupied by Ketu and aspected by Rahu-afflicted Mercury. The Karaka Venus is also afflicted by his association with the Sun and the aspect of Mars in Rasi. In Navamsa, Venus is debilitated.

The native of Chart 10 is in love with a Christian girl and wants to marry her against the wishes of his parents. The 9th lord Sun is debilitated and aspected by Saturn. The 9th from the Moon is occupied by debilitated Sun, Mars and Mercury while the 9th lord Venus is debilitated in the 8th. Note the debilitation of Lagna lord Jupiter and association with Saturn aspected by Mars. This indicates that an inter-religious marriage is inevitable.

The native of Chart 11 is a doctor and a Hindu. He was involved with a Muslim girl (Chart 12) who became his mistress. Note the affliction to the 9th house from the Sun and Mars and the affliction to the 9th lord from their aspect. From Chandra Lagna, the 9th lord is the Moon himself who is debilitated in the Ascendant.

This Muslim girl (Chart 12) got involved with the Hindu doctor of Chart 11 and became his mistress. Note the debilitation of Ascendant lord Mars in the 9th in association with Rahu aspected by Saturn and Ketu. The 9th from the Moon is not afflicted. This may be the reason for her clandestine relationship.

We can infer from these illustrations that the 9th house and its lord play an important role in cases of unconventional marriage.
